Why is an alkaline food diet wrong?
Every day I get asked how to get an alkaline food diet, and every day I have to tell people to stop looking. An acid alkaline diet is a great thing. When you get the right balance between acid-forming and alkaline-forming food and drink, you have one of the healthiest diets on the planet.
Of course, you still have to balance protein, carbs, and fats. You still have to ensure that you get sufficient vitamins and minerals. But those things become much easier within the framework of a balanced acid alkaline diet.
Trying to achieve an alkaline food diet is not balanced. Let’s hope you include all beverages in your diet plans. OK, we are used to using the word food to include food and drink. Hopefully you can agree that all food and drink, plus any dietary supplements, need to be accounted for. But that is implied by the word diet, so why not simply ask for an alkaline diet?
Strictly speaking, your total food intake should be alkaline, but it must be a balance of acid and alkaline foods and drinks. Around one quarter to one third acid-formers is about right. If you avoid acid forming foods entirely, you risk missing some essential nutrients.
You might think this is obvious, but many people fail to understand that acid is just as important as alkaline if you want to eat healthily. You need to strive for balance.
You might wonder why I make so much of this. It’s because far too many dieters pick one or two items out of their diet, and think that if they are alkaline foods, then all is OK. The chief culprit is alcohol. A big proportion of visitors to this website ask “Is alcohol alkaline?” Sometimes, the question is about a specific form of alcohol such as whiskey or vodka.
It’s the wrong question.
The right question is obviously more complicated. It is all about balance. If alcohol forms a reasonable part of your diet, and your overall diet is well balanced, then you are OK. If you drink too much alcohol, then it does not matter if it is acid or alkaline – it will cause health problems. The right amount varies from person to person, but the overriding principle is that alcohol should not form a significant part of your diet. You can check it’s contribution in my Acid-Alkaline Beverages Chart.
Obviously, the term alkaline food diet is much easier to use than acid-alkaline food diet. Just remember, it is important to balance both types of food so that you get adequate nutrition. Do not avoid acid foods, just make your total food intake alkaline.
